Faculty Profile Websites

Available at sjsu.edu/people/firstname.lastname, faculty profile websites are a service available to SJSU faculty to publish information online.

How to use faculty profiles

Download the faculty website guide [pdf]

The faculty website guide has complete instructions on how to:

  • log in to Modern Campus CMS
  • edit profile information
  • create and edit webpages
  • hide / unhide profile sections

The guide was written a few years ago and the software has gone through some cosmetic changes, but the steps and instructions outlined in it are still accurate.

Right now we're focusing on the campus' digital content remediation efforts, but will be update the guide soon.

Frequently asked questions

What are you doing to faculty profiles?

We are updating the code of the web template so that it is compliant with web accessibility best practices. The template is the header and footer and frame around your particular content.

In order for those changes to take effect, we have to republish every single page at sjsu.edu/people.

Why do I need to lock pages?

You don't have to necessarily. You only need to if you have something "under construction" or content that you don't want to get published as part of the update. Locking the page will prevent it from being published.

That also means that until you publish the page it will still have some out-of-compliance code in the header and footer. We will reach out later if that's the case.

How do I lock or check out pages?

Each file in the system has a light bulb icon that shows its current status:

  • Yellow or "glowing" means you have the file checked out
  • White or "not lit up" means the file is checked in.
  • A grey lock icon indicates someone other than you has the file checked out.

Most people won't ever see the lock icon, but some faculty have granted access to their profiles to other users.

When is the website going to be updated?

Before any changes can be made to the look and feel of faculty profile websites, we need to address immediate, short-term concerns around accessibility and inaccurate or outdated information.

A proper redesign project begins with research and conversations with stakeholders; there are over 1,000 faculty profile websites, so that means there are over 1,000 stakeholders to communicate with. That adds an extra layer of complexity to the project that UMC and IT haven't had the resources to tackle yet.

Is there training?

At the moment, there is no training.

Previously, the Center for Faculty Development provided training and ongoing support for faculty profile websites. CFD has since restructured into CFETI and no longer supports faculty websites.

The lack of training is a service gap that IT and CFETI are aware of and are figuring out how to best allocate resources to resolve it.

How can I get help with my faculty profile?

Almost all of the things people ask for help with are covered in the Faculty Profile Website Guide [pdf]. If you run into technical problems, please open a help ticket with the IT Service Desk.
