Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education in Mechanical Engineering (SAGE)

The Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) pathway allows motivated Mechanical Engineering students to earn both their Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS) degrees simultaneously in just five years. Information about the SAGE program overall can be found on the College of Graduate Studies.

Note: Second-semester, senior-level students in their graduating term are not eligible to enter the program.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You must have successfully completed between 60 and 120 undergraduate degree-applicable units at the time of admission.

  • You must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA when you apply.

  • You must complete the BSME junior-level courses (ME 106, ME 114, ME 154) with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • Students must be enrolled in or have completed the undergraduate Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (WID/100W/GWAR) prior to admission into the SAGE program.

What Will Be Counted Towards MSME

  •  One capstone course: ME157; ME182; or ME190

  • One elective course: Taking a graduate level ME course is strongly recommended. Courses from other departments will NOT be counted towards MSME. Some electives, such as ME165/265 & ME173/273, are crosslisted at both undergraduate and graduate level. In this case, you should take the graduate level course.

  • ME291 as an undergraduate elective. It usually takes two more semesters to complete MSME after taking this course.

  • To be eligible for SAGE, these courses must be taken in the semester you apply to the program or later. Courses taken before your SAGE application will NOT count toward your MSME degree and may affect your eligibility for the program.

Program Expecations

  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher in both undergraduate and graduate coursework to remain in good standing.

  • Earn a grade of B or better in all double-counted courses applied toward both degrees.

  • Meet every semester with the Department Graduate Program Coordinator for academic advising to track your coursework and graduate status.
